Can You Drive in Sardinia With a UK, US or Foreign Driving Licence?

Yes, you may be able to drive in Sardinia with a valid foreign driving licence, but the rule changes once you become resident in Italy. The outcome depends mainly on whether your licence was issued by an EU or EEA country, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada or another non-EU country.

For visitors and newly arrived residents, a valid foreign licence may be usable in Italy subject to conditions. For many non-EU and non-EEA licence holders, that period is limited to the first year after Italian residence begins. After that, the licence may need to be converted into an Italian licence if a reciprocal agreement exists. If conversion is not available, the driver may need to obtain an Italian licence by passing the required examinations.

The important date is usually not the date you bought a Sardinian property or arrived for a holiday. It is the date on which you establish Italian residence.

Your driving licence position changes when your relocation becomes official.

Short answer

EU and EEA driving licences are generally recognised in Italy, subject to specific rules on validity and exchange. UK licence holders can usually drive in Italy for one year after becoming resident and may be able to exchange their licence under the current UK-Italy agreement, provided they meet its conditions.

Holders of US, Canadian and many other non-EU licences can generally drive in Italy for up to one year after becoming Italian resident if they hold a valid licence together with an International Driving Permit or an official Italian translation where required.

After the first year of Italian residence, a non-EU or non-EEA licence is no longer sufficient unless it can be converted under a current reciprocal agreement. Ordinary US and Canadian licences are not generally convertible in Italy, so residents may need to obtain an Italian driving licence through the standard examination process.

The rules and bilateral agreements can change. Check the current position before you become resident or make decisions that depend on driving every day in Sardinia.

Can you drive in Sardinia as a visitor?

Usually, yes. A visitor who is not resident in Italy can generally drive in Sardinia using a valid foreign driving licence, provided that the licence covers the vehicle being driven and the driver complies with the applicable Italian requirements.

For a licence issued outside the EU or EEA, the driver may also need an International Driving Permit or an official translation of the licence into Italian. The original foreign licence should be carried with the additional document where required.

A short holiday, a property-viewing trip or seasonal use of a second home does not automatically make a person resident in Italy. However, a person should not treat repeated visits, long stays or a property purchase as a reason to ignore the difference between visitor status and Italian residence.

The practical position can also depend on insurance requirements, rental-company rules and the specific class of vehicle. A rental company may impose its own conditions even where the licence is legally valid for driving.

What changes when you become resident in Italy?

For many foreign licence holders, Italian residence starts a one-year period during which a valid non-EU or non-EEA licence may still be used in Italy, subject to the requirement for an International Driving Permit or official Italian translation.

After that first year, the foreign licence may no longer permit driving in Italy. The resident must then determine whether the licence can be converted into an Italian licence without sitting new driving tests.

Conversion is possible only where Italy has a reciprocal agreement with the country that issued the licence and where the driver meets the conditions of that agreement. The conditions can include the date on which the licence was issued, the date Italian residence began, the licence category, the validity of the foreign licence and the deadline for making the conversion application.

If no applicable reciprocal agreement exists, the resident will normally need to obtain an Italian licence through the ordinary procedure, which may involve theory and practical examinations.

Can you drive in Sardinia with a UK driving licence?

Yes, but the applicable rule depends on whether you are a visitor or an Italian resident and, for residents, on the date residence began.

A UK licence holder who becomes resident in Italy can generally drive using a valid UK licence for up to one year from the date Italian residence begins. This rule applies to people who became resident in Italy on or after 1 January 2023.

The United Kingdom and Italy have an agreement allowing eligible holders of UK licences to exchange them for an Italian licence. The agreement has conditions. In particular, the licence must be valid, and the holder must normally apply within the time limits established by the agreement.

A UK licence holder should not wait until the end of the first year to discover whether conversion is available. The exchange process can require documents, medical certification, administrative payments and appointments with the Motorizzazione Civile.

A person who acquired Italian residence before certain historic dates may fall within transitional rules. The current position should be checked directly before an application is made.

Can a US licence holder drive in Sardinia?

Yes, as a visitor and generally during the first year after becoming Italian resident, provided that the US licence is valid and accompanied by an International Driving Permit or official Italian translation where required.

However, an ordinary US driving licence is not generally convertible into an Italian driving licence under a reciprocal exchange agreement.

This has an important practical consequence for an American moving permanently to Sardinia. After the first year of Italian residence, the driver will usually need to obtain an Italian licence through the standard process if they wish to continue driving.

The Italian licensing procedure can involve medical certification, theory preparation, a theory examination, driving lessons where needed and a practical driving test. The process takes time. For a resident whose daily life depends on a car, particularly in rural Sardinia, this should be planned early rather than treated as an administrative detail.

Can a Canadian licence holder drive in Sardinia?

A Canadian licence holder can generally drive in Sardinia as a visitor and during the first year after becoming Italian resident, subject to the same requirements that apply to other non-EU licence holders.

The original valid licence should be supported by an International Driving Permit or official Italian translation where required. A driver should also ensure that the licence category covers the vehicle and that insurance requirements are satisfied.

Canada does not have a general nationwide reciprocal licence-conversion arrangement that allows ordinary Canadian licence holders to exchange their licence for an Italian one. The practical outcome is therefore similar to the position of many US residents: after the first year of Italian residence, an Italian licence may need to be obtained through the ordinary examination route.

Do not rely on rules that apply in a particular Canadian province, or on a driving experience from another European country. The relevant issue is whether Italy currently recognises the particular foreign licence for conversion.

What about EU, EEA and Nordic driving licences?

A valid licence issued by an EU or EEA country is generally recognised in Italy. This includes licences issued by EU countries and EEA countries such as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

For many residents, an EU or EEA licence can be used until its stated expiry date. However, different rules may apply where the licence has no expiry date, has an unusually long validity period, has been issued in exchange for a non-EU licence or is subject to a particular restriction.

Nordic residents should not assume that every licence issued in Northern Europe is treated identically. Sweden, Denmark and Finland are EU countries, while Norway and Iceland are part of the EEA. Their licences are generally recognised, but the individual licence, its expiry date and how it was originally obtained can still matter.

If you are moving permanently to Sardinia, check the validity period on your licence and consider whether an exchange would be practical before a problem arises.

Do you need an International Driving Permit in Italy?

If your driving licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, you will often need an International Driving Permit or an official translation into Italian when driving in Italy.

The International Driving Permit does not replace the original licence. It should be carried together with the original, valid foreign licence.

A translation should be official and suitable for use with Italian authorities. A simple self-prepared translation is not a safe substitute.

The requirement is particularly important for visitors from the United States, Canada, Australia and other countries outside the EU and EEA. It is also relevant to residents during the first year after Italian residence begins.

Check the requirements before travel and before collecting a rental car. The absence of the correct supporting document can create difficulty during a roadside check or after an accident.

How does licence conversion work in Italy?

Licence conversion means replacing an eligible foreign driving licence with an Italian licence without the ordinary theory and practical driving examinations.

The procedure is handled by the Motorizzazione Civile. In Sardinia, the relevant office depends on the area where the applicant lives and the administrative procedure in force at the time.

The documents commonly required may include:

  • The original valid foreign driving licence.
  • A valid identity document.
  • Evidence of Italian residence.
  • Codice fiscale documentation.
  • A medical certificate in the required form.
  • Photographs and payment receipts.
  • An official translation where necessary.
  • Immigration documentation where applicable for a non-EU resident.

The exact documents and fees can change. The reciprocal agreement may also impose specific limits, including a deadline for application after residence begins.

The foreign licence is normally surrendered as part of the conversion process. A driver should understand the consequence before proceeding, particularly if they still have significant ties to the country that issued it.

Why does this matter when choosing a home in Sardinia?

Driving is not a peripheral issue for many people moving to Sardinia. It may determine whether a property is suitable for year-round life.

A rural home near Alghero, in the Nurra, inland Gallura or outside a coastal village may require regular driving for shopping, schools, medical appointments, airport travel and ordinary social life. A buyer who cannot lawfully drive after the first year of residence may face a practical problem that was not visible during short holiday visits.

This does not mean that rural homes are unsuitable. It means that transport should be considered alongside road access, parking, distance from services and the legal status of the property itself.

For a wider checklist on selecting a home for a permanent move, see Moving to Sardinia: The First 10 Things to Do Before You Buy or Rent a Home.

Example: A US couple buying a rural home

A retired American couple buys a home in the countryside near Alghero. Both hold valid US driving licences and have International Driving Permits. During their first year as Italian residents, they drive legally and assume they can continue doing so indefinitely.

As the first anniversary of their registered Italian residence approaches, they discover that ordinary US licences cannot generally be converted into Italian licences. The nearest services, including shopping, pharmacies and many appointments, require a car.

The couple may still obtain Italian licences, but they now need to plan for the examination process, timing and mobility during the transition. Had they checked the rule before buying, they could have factored driving requirements into the location, timing and overall relocation plan.

What Govoni Law does and does not do

Govoni Law is an independent Italian law firm assisting foreign buyers with the legal protection of property purchases in Sardinia and elsewhere in Italy.

We help buyers review property documentation, seller information and proposed contractual commitments before they sign an offer, pay a deposit or transfer funds. We provide clear written legal advice in English to help clients decide whether to proceed, renegotiate, impose conditions or walk away.

We do not convert driving licences, arrange International Driving Permits, represent clients before the Motorizzazione Civile, provide driving instruction or obtain Italian licences on a client’s behalf. These matters require direct contact with the relevant authority, a driving school or another appropriately qualified professional.

When relocation leads to a property purchase, our role is to protect the buyer’s legal position before commitment.

Checklist before driving as a new Sardinian resident
